The Talk to Learn Team is looking to recruit a forward-thinking and versatile Specialist Teacher who is passionate about improving outcomes for children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). The post will be permanent on a part-time basis for 2.5 days a week (0.5).
Based at Number One Riverside as part of Rochdale Additional Needs Service (RANS), you will work as a member of our friendly team of Specialist Speech and Language Therapists, Specialist Teachers and Specialist Teaching Assistants on a daily basis and will liaise closely with professionals across Education, Health and Social Care.
The Talk to Learn Team is continuously evolving and you will be at the forefront of new initiatives and evidence based practice which can improve the lives of children who find communication hard. We were the first service to achieve Naplic’s DLD-friendly status earlier this year and continue to challenge ourselves to develop and improve what we do for children and families.
Your role will involve working with a caseload of children with significant Speech and Language Difficulties including Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), in Early Years and Primary settings. You will work with staff and parents to promote inclusion and ensure that children with SLCN are supported to communicate successfully, socialise with others, access and make progress in learning, and feel happy and confident.
You will be an advocate for children with SLCN, using your strong communication skills to describe the impact of SLCN on learning, access to the curriculum, wellbeing and social participation to others in an accessible way. You will be able to use your knowledge of SEN processes, the EYFS and Primary curriculums, skilfully supporting and coaching staff, demonstrating teaching techniques and strategies, adapting teaching plans, recommending specialist resources, and challenging practice where appropriate.
Training others and sensitively supporting parents are integral parts of the role and you will get the opportunity to design and deliver workshops, training courses and networking events for staff and parents, with other members of the team.
You will be innovative, and have a flexible but organised approach to your work. We are a small supportive team and an ability to join in and share ideas and the workload is essential. We are passionate about spreading the word about DLD so a creative streak with a can-do attitude would be very useful assets.
You will be a skilled teacher with a sound knowledge of SLCN and SEN but will be aware that you will need to continually update your skills and knowledge in this rapidly changing field. The successful applicant will have opportunities to develop their skills and expertise ‘on the job’ through mentoring and support from experienced staff, and will have access to training and development activities.

*Teachers with a high level of relevant knowledge and experience in their specialism will receive a ‘SEN Upper’ spot value. Teachers who do not yet have a high level of relevant knowledge and experience in their specialism will receive a ‘SEN Lower’ spot value.
In determining whether a RANS teacher has ‘high levels of relevant knowledge and experience in their specialism’, the Head of Service will consider each case on its individual merit. For a teacher on the SEN lower spot value, this consideration will take place as part of the teacher appraisal process i.e. as a pay recommendation following the end of year review.
